Details

Swallowing involves the passage of a bolus (chewed, rounded mass of food) from the mouth to the pharynx and into the esophagus. In order to prevent the trachea from ingesting food matter, the epiglottis closes over the larynx in an automatic temporary reaction (the swallowing reflex). Shortly after the passage of the bolus, the epiglottis opens up again to allow for breathing.
